These are the first (second if you count hello world) packages I have packaged, they work well for me and hopefully they will make their way into gutsy backports. The entry to add to your sources.list is

deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/g2g591/ubuntu gutsy main

deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/g2g591/ubuntu gutsy main

If you wish to download them manually, go to  https://edge.launchpad.net/~g2g591/+archive

I’ve decided to take it upon myself to learn how to package stuff for Ubuntu . For those of you who also want to learn, I’ve gathered a few links.  https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PackagingGuide/Basic#head-eebbf65b04c24957d6b5aecab39fc5e886ce6c09  https://wiki.kubuntu.org/PbuilderHowto https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MOTU/Packages/REVU?action=show&redirect=REVU . Those should be enough to get you started.

Update: I’ve successfully packaged my first piece of software ( http://revu.tauware.de/details.py?upid=468)

My mandrivia experiance

A few weeks ago I decided to try mandrivia 2007. After starting the install progress and watching the progress bar for a few minutes, it abruptly froze then shutdown the computer. after restarting and booting into Kubuntu, I opened partation editor to find that  partition editor couldn’t detect any of my partitions! I put in a few live cds to verify, and it seemed that the partition data indeed had been wiped. after trying a few things, I ended up having to do a total drive reformat.  I don’t think I’ll try Mandrivia 2008.

Opensuse 10.3 (KDE) Review

Over the past few weeks I decided to try out the latest version of SUSE. I found it to be a reasonable alternative to  Kubuntu, however in a few areas it is a bit wanting. Its package manager for instance insists on only updating the repository caches when you open it, causing  a long delay in startup. Its control center (Yast)  is pretty nifty, I liked the boot loader configuration module, but i found the /etc/sysconfig editor somewhat like the windows registry(!). I didn’t really care for Kickoff (a replacement for the Kmenu) but appreciated the option to switch to switch back to the more common K menu.

Usability:10/10

Default theme:7/10 (I’m not a fan of green)

Package management:7/10(Hate that 5 minute startup)

Overall: 8/10

Gutsy Gibbon

The latest version  of *Ubuntu is 7.10, codenamed Gutsy Gibbon. I’ve been using gutsy from alpha 2 or 3 about a month or so ago, and it has been rock solid for me (your mileage may vary) so if you already use *ubuntu I recommend  upgrading, as the bugs are mostly fixed now, The official release is in 13 days, so I’d wait till then if you can’t spare a little patience or are using an ati card. The command to upgrade is  gksu “update-manager -c”

My opinions in a nutshell

I found a story that pretty much summarizes my opinions on Vista. My opinions on Macs are that they are very restrictive (can’t install windows to coexist with it on powerpc, and other reasons) and too expensive to be a viable alternative to windows
